Ormonde Jayne – Take Comfort in Black Hemlock – Autumn Scents for Men

The advent of long chilly evenings improves immeasurably with an enveloping warm fragrance that sparkles.  Ormonde Jayne’s house signature scent Ormonde Man comes into its element during autumn.  Winning awards since its launch in 2004 when it was the first fine fragrance to use Oudh and Black Hemlock as an ingredient, fans have waxed lyrical over its mysterious powers of seduction and complexity ever since.

Enjoy Ormonde Man in its original Eau de Parfum, or as a home fragrance with a scented candle or our new reed diffuser.  Ormonde Jayne has just launched a new twist on its house signature: Ormonde Elixir with a note of Cambodian Oudh.

Masculine fragrances rarely venture outside tried and tested stereotypes. Those who try endure the wrath of God and it takes guts to cut loose. Ormonde Man is a sultry woody floral that sounds a muted, tourmaline-green chord from top note to drydown. Hear it once, and you’ll want it again. One of the best perfumes in the last 20 years.”

Ormonde Man is spectacular. It disposes of the sharp glass edges and hard bathroom tile of the hygienic school to offer something unusual: masculine gentleness. I can’t imagine a scent more right for this rough time. Citrus and spice are ingeniously hidden inside sweet heavy cream and warm, caressable male skin. (A hay absolute, perhaps.) The overall effect is of clarity mellowing to a golden gourmand, though in reality it is contemporary art whose beauty lies in deftly defying identification. In Italian, furbo means sly and cunning, and this scent is furbo, but nicely. You’re not sure if it’s subtle or sharp. (It’s both.) Such a scent for men is one of the small revolutions that make you believe again in the possibility of men wearing intelligent scents.

In 2004, Ormonde Jayne introduced the attar Oudh onto the international scene of fine fragrance. Only ever used as a pure attar or blended with the Taif rose attar, I realised the potential of this extraordinary oil. After a visit to the agar woods in Thailand and Laos and months of field work, Ormonde Man was launched. The world’s first fine fragrance to use Oudh, now a confirmed perfume category, Ormonde Jayne leads innovation in.
