Rachel Entwistle for Paul Smith
Paul Smith continues to support innovative British talent by commissioning a new collection from London-based jeweller Rachel Entwistle
Rachel Entwistle jewellery has been a feature in Paul Smith shops since 2012, but for spring/summer ’18 Rachel was invited to create a special capsule collection of jewellery to echo the themes of the Paul Smith catwalk collection, to debut on the runway at Paris Fashion Week.
The process involved “two months of intense design and exploration, followed by design meetings, mock-ups and finally creating the collection for the catwalk show in the summer of 2017”, said Rachel, writing on her blog.
Every piece of Rachel Entwistle jewellery is produced by hand in her Shoreditch studio and this collaboration is no exception. “We set almost every stone in our studio”, said Rachel.
Entwistle’s work is known for its exploration of symbolism and iconography from around the world, which gives her designs a sense of historical and cultural depth.
In the same way, the pieces in this collaboration could be mistaken for found objects rather than new creations. The strong lines and elegant circles created from Sterling silver or 18 carat gold vermeil resemble astrological tools or religious artefacts.
Rachel spoke about wanting to “explore more art and abstract art inspirations and influences” in this collection and there is clearly a modernist quality to the designs, especially the men’s necklaces, which nod to the hanging sculptures of Alexander Calder. Colourful accents of blue lapis lazuli, green onyx and synthetic red coral throughout the collection add punctuation points of strong colour to the elegant designs.
