Caran d’Ache + Paul Smith

For the third installment of this special design collaboration, Paul adds his Artist Stripe to the Caran d’Ache’s 849 ballpoint pen and a set of water-soluble colour pencils.

A shared passion for colour is the unifying theme at the core of this collaboration. The appreciation of colour has been a hallmark of the Swiss stationery manufacturer’s products since 1915 and is also a career-defining feature of Paul’s design work, both in fashion and beyond it.

In this latest chapter in the ongoing partnership, Paul has transformed his everyday top pocket companion – the Caran d’Ache 849 ballpoint pen – with a vibrant Artist Stripe exterior. The result is a playful twist on a classic design.

The pen is packaged in a choice of eight coloured cases, drawn from the individual colours of the Artist Stipe: rose pink, petrol blue, coral pink, peacock blue, pistachio, racing green, damson purple and orange.

Nodding to the pivotal role that drawing and other traditional art forms still play in his design process, Paul has also added a set of limited edition Supracolor® Soft water-soluble colour pencils to this collaboration. The eight individual pencils come in the composite shades of the Artist Stripe and the same motif also decorates the special presentation case.

To showcase some of what Caran d’Ache’s water-soluble Supracolor® Soft pencils can do, Paul asked South London based artist Fred Coppin to create a series of floral studies using the set.

Perfect for drawing and painting, Caran d’Ache’s Supracolor® Soft water-soluble pencils have been appreciated by artists over the decades for their bright pigments and exceptional coverage.

Focusing on colour, Fred elected to create minimalist floral studies focusing on strong line work with subtle shades sections. These floral studies act as a taster for a full exhibition of new works by Fred, which will be on display at No. 9 Albemarle Street later this year.
