Jennifer Lee: Ten Pots 6 – 29 October 2021

Erskine, Hall & Coe are delighted to announce a forthcoming exhibition of work by Jennifer Lee.

The main focus of the exhibition will be ten outstanding, new hand-built vessels and bowls for which Lee is internationally famous. It will also include seven thrown pots, made in Japan and London, accompanied by a number of drawings.

It has been a remarkable five years for Lee since her last exhibition of new work at Erskine, Hall & Coe in 2016. Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge held a highly acclaimed solo exhibition in 2019, Jennifer Lee: the potter’s space. This was her first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery since 1994. She concurrently curated a display in the nearby Fitzwilliam Museum, Jennifer Lee: A personal selection.

Lee was a guest artist in residence at The Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan in 2018, and in Mashiko, Japan the following year. In Her Majesty the Queen’s New Year 2021 Honours List, Lee was awarded an OBE, Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to ceramics.

In 2018, she was the recipient of the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize. Announcing Lee as the winner, Jonathan Anderson, Creative Director of LOEWE, stated “Jennifer Lee for me is a landmark in form.”

The roots of Lee’s hand-building process lie in ancient methods of pinching and coiling. Her vessels are distinguished by her unique colouring method of mixing mineral oxides into the clay before making. In 2019, Erskine, Hall & Coe held an exhibition of her works dating from 1990 to 2011, with vessels from this exhibition entering the collections of the Hepworth Wakefield and the National Museum of Wales.

Currently fifty international public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The British Museum in London, the National Museum in Stockholm and The Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art in Shigaraki, have work by Lee in their permanent collections.

A catalogue accompanying our exhibition will include an essay by Robin Vousden.

Lucie Rie & Gertrud Vasegaard 1 – 23 September 2021

Erskine, Hall & Coe are delighted to present Lucie Rie & Gertrud Vasegaard, an exhibition of works by two of the great 20th century artists working in clay.

Born in Vienna in 1902, Lucie Rie escaped to London as a refugee and established her own studio in Albion Mews in the late 1930s.  Renowned for her delicate and simple, yet elegant vases and bowls, she became one of Britain’s greatest modern potters and the recipient of many awards for her outstanding achievements in ceramics.

Gertrud Vasegaard was born in Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm in 1913.  Having been brought up in a family of potters, she and her sister, Lisbeth Hjorth (Munch-Petersen) were the first producers of studio ceramics in Denmark.  Vasegaard used a soothing palette of glazes on her works, which are distinguished by their unique combination of simplicity and richness.  Recognised for her contribution to ceramics, Vasegaard is included in the Danish cultural canon and represented by a number of international public collections.

Bringing together over thirty works by Rie and Vasegaard, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to admire the styles that have had an enduring influence on British and Danish ceramic art.  Jørgensen wrote that “when viewing the work of these two modern artists, we encounter the warmth of fired earth and a simple philosophy behind it: that of love and beauty.”

A catalogue accompanying the exhibition features an essay written by Jørgensen, an art critic and art historian based in Denmark, and author of the definitive monograph on Gertrud Vasegaard published in 2011.  We are grateful for his generous help in making this exhibition possible.

Gordon Baldwin Online Exhibition 6^th – 13^th July 2021

Erskine, Hall & Coe are delighted to present an online exhibition of four sculptures by Gordon Baldwin.

Baldwin (b. 1932) is an important British sculptor and ceramicist who has been active since the 1950s. These four works were made between the late 1970s and the 1990s. Although they were created at different times throughout Baldwin’s career, visually they are quite harmonic. He often revisited central concepts or themes in his work, once writing

“The events that happen in the studio seem very distant at times. I coax and allow them to develop. There may be disappointments. I get very anxious. The best ones for me spread out from themselves.”

Simon Kidd – Murlach 27 April – 20 May 2021

Erskine, Hall & Coe present Murlach, the latest exhibition of new works by Simon Kidd.

Murlach Bay, in County Antrim Northern Ireland, is a place that Simon Kidd has visited regularly from early childhood. The bay became a catalyst for contemplation and the source of inspiration for this exhibition of new work. Kidd’s response to the landscape is reflected in the work – he brings “the place into the piece”.

The beauty of the Irish landscape has been a lodestone for Simon Kidd’s work from the beginning. He recently wrote that his work “is a response to Northern Ireland as a country in terms of both the civilisation as well as the physical land it encompasses. It is a reflection and a response of the physical, historic, and symbolic.
